Will polyurethanes shine last? Its clear gloss.?

We just used it on our table and it did not dry yet but it is so glossiey, It is awesome. Will it last? Will polyurethanes shine last? Its clear gloss.?
Yes it will. Apply at least 1-2 more coats, and scuff between coats with OOO steel wool. Good luck. Will polyurethanes shine last? Its clear gloss.?
Like the beautiful woman you see in the mirror, alas everything eventually fades.

Which is more durable outside, lacquer (such as Garco Sealer) or polyurethane (such as Minwax Clear Shield)?

assuming that yellowing from the sun is no factor at all; only resistance to cracking, peeling, chalking, etc. for protecting the wood surfaceWhich is more durable outside, lacquer (such as Garco Sealer) or polyurethane (such as Minwax Clear Shield)?
Do not use polyurethane. It isn't meant for use outside where it's exposed to UV. It will deteriorate and worse the color of the wood under it will deteriorate. Spar varnish is best. It gives a good clear, non yellowing, non deteriorating coating for out side surfaces. It's the best coating for a wood door or the like. I did my solid wood, west facing, Kitchen door with spar varnish in '86 and it still looks great today. You can purchase Spar Varnish at any paint store, home center or hardware store.

EDITED: I tried Marine Spar Polyurethane on my front door three years ago. It's in terrible shape and Im preparing to take it down and redo it. Spar Varnish is far superior.Which is more durable outside, lacquer (such as Garco Sealer) or polyurethane (such as Minwax Clear Shield)?
You can use products like Minwax Clear Shield or Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane. These products are good for exterior use and will be resistant to sun, moisture, etc. You will however have to repeat the process every 2 or 3 years based on what type of conditions the surface will be exposed to. Clear Shield and Helmsman are actually the same product as I recently found out from a Minwax rep. I have experience selling both products in my store. I do not have any experience or knowledge of an exterior lacquer clear coat.
Look for a ';MARINE SPAR POLYURETHANE';

Commonly used on wood items on boats.

Spraying polyurethane on clear acrylic?

Making a coffee table

sprayed the top with white knight crystal clear acrylic

can i now spray it with polyurethane

will it blister or have any negative side affectsSpraying polyurethane on clear acrylic?
Sand the acrylic thoroughly with fine grit sandpaper. Do not use steel wool. A coat of a good polyurethane will give better depth and when dry will be just as hard as an acrylic.

Spraying polyurethane on clear acrylic?
You don't have to use poly as a top coat as the acrylic is harder. If you want a deeper looking top coat apply a second or even a third light coat of acrylic.

  • Is clear coat Polyurethane harmful to fish?

I'm planing on giving my beta fish a ';petrified forest,'; emulating the rivers/shallow waters of their natural habitats. As I know, they don't want lots of water movement, and originate in parts of Cambodia and Thailand. The thought is to make some twigs sticking up from the floor, so that they have hiding place. I also and putting a plant in it as well. The question is whether or not after I prepare the twigs if the polyurethane I'm planning on coating them with will somehow harm the beta fish. I've looked for any chemical data pointing to a release of chemicals into the water or it somehow changing the pH of the water. So far have not found any solid information. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Is clear coat Polyurethane harmful to fish?
This should not be done. Poly is safe while dry, but can disolve in water over time. You will most likely kill the fish within a month or so. And also betas love to pick at wood and roots, making it very easy for the bata to ingest the chemical. I suggest that you go to your local fish store and get wood that you can put in without treatment, or wood that is treated with safe chemicals unlike polly....Is clear coat Polyurethane harmful to fish?
polyurothane some stuff and stick it in some water treated the way ur tank will be. check ph for a few dayz. I doubt it but im not sure. if there are no chemical changes i doubt it will harm them unless they try 2 eat it or sumthin ;)
Once the poly is FULLY cured it should be safe.

The problem is that it does take some time (weeks) to fully cure and stop releasing various chemicals.

If it still smells like Poly, dont put it in the tank.

Personally I would just collect some old dead sticks, soak them in a tub of water for a few weeks and use them as they are. They will grow algae on them and give you that natural swamp look that you are trying to achieve. The wood will probably release natural tannins into the water and colour it brown. This isn't harmfull to the fish, just do water changes to control it.

    Ian
Its probably better for the betta if you didn't do any of that. Yes its harmful as well as the stick found in the yard. Do you want something that looks cool or do you want to take care of fish properly?

Is the deluxe acrylic with sealer coat and polyurethane clear coat good for a paint job?

I see two auto body shops advertising these paints and clear coat deals in the newspaper and was wondering if these were good stuff for the low price. They are asking about $299-$349 for the paint, sealer, and polyurethane clear coat. And the $299 deal comes with a 4 year guarantee. I am just looking for something to freshen up my car and not going for a custom, show car paint job. I am also planning to sand and primer it myself or should I just let them spray it? (My car is white)Is the deluxe acrylic with sealer coat and polyurethane clear coat good for a paint job?
Is Deluxe the brand or just a description. It sounds very cheap. With paint, you really get what you pay for.

If you are just wanting a average white paint job, I would go to a auto paint store and get an acrylic enamel white paint. You should be able to get a gallon of paint with reducer and harder for $200 - $250. If you are just repainting (no body work) and your old paint is not peeling then you shouldn't have to use primer or sealer. Just wet sand with 400 grit and paint right over the old paint. With acrylic enamel you don't have to mess with a clearcoat. Is the deluxe acrylic with sealer coat and polyurethane clear coat good for a paint job?
    I hate ';clear coat';

    It fades, peels, and cracks.

You may want to try resin. Depending on humidity in your area, it should set up in a couple of days or less. Only downside is possible bubbles in the final project around flower stems. Conduct project outdoors or with very good ventilation.

try EasyCast if you want to add translucent colorant.

Why did clear polyurethane turn my oak floor dark?

My husband redid all the floors, after he sanded them, they were super light like I wanted, then he put a clear Poly on them, now they back to the same dark color. What did we do wrong?. Why are they so dark?. This was a lot of work for the same look. Why did clear polyurethane turn my oak floor dark?
since you, unfortunately, have to re-finish, here are a couple of things you could do to get the floor as light as possible. after you have re-sanded, go up in grit 1 or even 2 grades finer. the finer sanding you do, the more you will close the pores of the wood limiting penetration of the poly. start with 120 since you are just trying to remove the poly, then go higher 180, 220. if you are switching to water based poly, seal the floor first with a product like this:

    http://minwax.com/products/hardwood_floo鈥?/a>

do a small test area in a closet or other inconspicuous area before doing the whole floor. wipe the area with mineral spirits or denatured alcohol. this will show you the final 'color', then apply your sealer and topcoat.

multiple topcoats: 3-5. once you have applied the first, it will not darken further.

Hope that helps, good luck! Why did clear polyurethane turn my oak floor dark?
Too late now! But you should have tried a sample first in a closet to see what the finished product would look like. If the person that sold you your floor finish

told you it would not darken the natural sanded color, he was worng. But if you didn't tell him you wanted them to be lite or blonde you were wrong.

There are clear finishes that will not darken the natural color a great deal, but almost none, without out a specialized application will not darken them somewhat.

It also depends a lot on the type of wood, it's age, and the product's end effect in your particular situation. Hardly any one could tell you that except an experienced wood floor man, but even he would run a test first to be sure of the result. Water or oil base, you should still run a small test. Because Oak is like a spong an is apt to change color even more then other woods.

Just spitting on your finger and/or wetting a small area will show what the color will be. The call letters are: Ask questions, Test first, Then buy %26amp; finish.

Sorry you went through so much hard work just to end up back at square one. But look on the bright side...Your floors have to look 100% better now, and you learned a good lesson!
They look different when wet and polyurethane keeps the wet look. Maybe he should have put a lighter (whitewash) stain on it. I know it's a lot of work but you need to test first, you are not unique in this problem.
Even clear poly has an Amber cast to it. Plus the color of wood darkens even with a clear sealer, the finish brings out the wood grain.

Can you varnish with Polyurethane clear coat over oil paints after dry?

If the oil paints are dry can you put varnish over them?

    Yes or no?

No lectures please. Can you varnish with Polyurethane clear coat over oil paints after dry?
Retired paint contractor. Not a good idea.It will tend to ';yellow'; with time.It also doesn't bond well to finish paint.Better to repaint using a good quality high-gloss paintCan you varnish with Polyurethane clear coat over oil paints after dry?
Well for example apinting cars sometimes they use Lacquer paint and after that a clear polyurethane to protect it , but in concrete floors for example you are supposed to removes all paints before applying polyurethane
Oil based varnish like spar varnish is better. Spar varnish might be a bit soft though.

If you are going to try Varathane use the oil based version instead of the water based version over oils.

HELP!!!!!!!!! i need to fix a guitars polyurethane clear coat!?

i just refinished my guitar and put on a polyurethane clear coat. it is filled with little bumps and imperfections. i have to have the guitar done by tonight, and i need to get the coat looking good by 930 tonight.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HELP!!!!!!!!! i need to fix a guitars polyurethane clear coat!?
Without knowing your time zone I don't know how long it is until 9:30. Did you sand between coats? For a smooth finish sand between coats with 220 grit sandpaper. Then use a tack cloth to remove any dust and apply one more coat. I don't know if there is enough time for it to dry before your deadline. If you sand the body you will have a smooth surface for tonight's gig and it will look good except for very close up. Then you can tack and finish after the show for a perfect finish tomorrow night.HELP!!!!!!!!! i need to fix a guitars polyurethane clear coat!?
Kiss that idea goodbye. Paint takes awhile to dry. As you just finished putting on a clear coat it takes 72 hours before it is really dry. Before you can sand it smooth and try again with a thinner coat. Otherwise it will wrinkle.

Can I put a clear polyurethane over white enamel paint? ?

White paint is already dry. are there going to any cracks when it all dries outCan I put a clear polyurethane over white enamel paint? ?
Depends why you want to apply the poly over the enamel. If you are going to then use a water-based poly since it doesn't yellow like the oil based. Can I put a clear polyurethane over white enamel paint? ?
I yhink if you read the instructions on the poly it will tell you that the surface needs to be free of grease, dirt and paint. At least the polyurethanes I normally use do. That tells me you don't want to apply it over paint.
Works well over any color paint. Use a fine brush and use uninterrupted even strokes. Let the first coat dry and repeat once or twice more.

Have done it many, many times.

I like the water based Polyurethane.

What type of polyurethane or sealant can I use to get a hard clear thick cover on a table?

All polyurethane's will do what you ask. Water based tend to be a little clearer, sometimes with a slight blueish cast. Solvent based urethane's are typically a little 'warmer', looking with an amber cast. Obviously, the more coats, the thicker the finish. Two or three thin coats are recommended. A gloss finish is somewhat harder than satin. (It'll say gloss or satin on the can.) If you require a VERY thick finish, use a clear two part epoxy. It's expensive and kind of difficult to work with, but it gives you that 'sheet of glass' look. They often use it with decoupage. Good luck with your project! What type of polyurethane or sealant can I use to get a hard clear thick cover on a table?

I've painted the floor (plywood) with latex paint and added some flowers along the border. I want to put a sealer on it that won't turn yellow like polyurethane does. Any ideas? This is a covered porch so it needs to withstand the weather that may blow in on it. Thanks for your help!!What is a good clear paint sealer for latex paint that won't turn yellow like polyurethane?
Minwax has a water based version of their Helmsman spar urethane. it's a clear, non-yellowing finish for interior or exterior use. What is a good clear paint sealer for latex paint that won't turn yellow like polyurethane?
Varithane makes a water based polyurethane that doesn't yellow. It is for floors. The only problem is that it is for interior floors. I don't know how it will hold up to the weather outside.
There are non-yellowing products - varnish, you need to put several coats on, let dry well between each coat
there is a exterior water base poly by zar, It will do the job

Can you apply clear polyurethane over a painted wood surface? or does it have to be new wood?

Yes you can, but make sure the paint and polyurethane are compatible. I have had this happen where the two layers actually had a chemical reaction and they melted off of the surface I was painting, plus they can get really hot and possibly start a fire. If you are not sure if they will work together, try putting both the paint and polyurethane on a scrap piece of wood first. Let it sit and see if there is any reaction. This way you won't wreck your project.

    Good luck!

Can clear oil based polyurethane be used on latex semi-gloss?

I need something that will add a little shine and protection to a painted vanity. Can clear oil based polyurethane be used on latex semi-gloss?
Oil based poly works fine over latex. It will slightly change the color, though. It will be a bit more yellowish than when you started. If that bothers you you can use a a water based finish like Minwax Polycrilic, which is crystal clear. The polycrilic holds up pretty well, but for really rough/wet use I would do the oil finish.

What type of Polyurethane should I use to clear coat a bar top?

I've built a bar for the game room and I am about to clear coat the top. It is a stained wooden top and I am wondering what to use to clear coat it. I would like to make it look like a bar top at a restaurant but the epoxy way is too expensive. I've used Minwax polyurethane on a table I have. Should I just do like 7 coats of Minwax or is there a better way to do it? Preferably something I can get from home depot. What type of Polyurethane should I use to clear coat a bar top?
I like the spar urethane - but still takes several coats, and is what I used on my oak butcherblock counter top. I used 4 coats, three years ago, they are still like new. What type of Polyurethane should I use to clear coat a bar top?
Ok, what I have found that works super good is Min Wax Helmsmen spar urethane. This stuff is used on boats, water skis etc. Just do the FIRST coat with a 60/40 mix, of 60% urethane and 40% thinner. This will seal the wood and make the next coat go even and smooth. Just lightly sand ,after the first coat with a 300 or 400 wet or dry sand paper and use it dry. Sand just enough to get any dust particles off of the finish. Now you can do a 50/50 mix or just go with straight urethane. Just sand the rest of the coats with either 400 or 600 wet or dry and use it dry. That is up to you. Depends on the dust particles that will get on the finish while it is drying. Remember to keep the sand paper clean and wipe the surface after you sand over it the first time and every time after. This seems like a lot of work ,because the urethane has to dry, but in the end it will look awesome. For a bar top 3 maybe 4 coats should do it. Then when you reach the look you want, wax the top with min wax finishing wax, and do this every once in a while after using the bar. Good luck,it will look great.
I agree with ';livnthe'; - spar urethane is waterproof. It is also referred to as marine varnish or marine poly/urethane and it is used in marine (boating) applications. It's best to use a waterproof clear coat because the bar top will likely have lots of water on it...from spills, water rings on glasses and mugs, from wiping cloths, etc. Regular polyurethane is water resistant but it will not hold up to the kind of regular soakings that a typical bar top will encounter. Apply multiple coats, 3 or 4 initially, for best protection and re-apply regularly...at least once a year.
    your way is fine.

Recommend gloss or high gloss oil-base poly. Yeah- plenty coats...until you get sick of it.

Dont entertain the idea of less than Gloss. Further oil is more durable - so that combo will get you closest to the bar look without doing a 1/4'; of resin and all that.
You can oil poly the finish, to achieve a resin look that equates to as many as 50 coats. The epoxy purpose is mainly to embed coins %26amp; not feel them. 4 -5 coats is more than enough.
valspar marine polyurethane will do the trick

Polyurethane clear gloss over porch Enamel Paint?

I am getting different answers at the few stores we have here about using a polyurethane clear gloss that can be used over a painted wood porch. I used Dutch Boy Exterior/interior Enamel porch and deck paint. Just painted it. One tells me no Minwax, one said only use a brand called Zar, which no one has here, I looked on internet and the Zar is Really costly!! So far the only thing they all agree on is to wait 2-3 days after painted, then put on one coat of polyurethane, let dry, lightly sand it so the polyurethane has something to bond to, then wait 24 hours before doing a second coat. I was able to put 2 coats of the paint with a bit left over from one gallon. So I am hoping one gallon would do for 2 coats of the polyurethane. Any idea's from someone that had this kind of experience please. I am doing it for my dad and want it to turn out nice looking, but I can't afford $40.00 for Zar besides the fact that no-one has it. Thanking You In Advance.Polyurethane clear gloss over porch Enamel Paint?
There's no reason to apply polyurethane over enamel porch and deck paint. It probably won't adhere very well anyway.

The paint is a wood sealant - why seal the sealant?Polyurethane clear gloss over porch Enamel Paint?
what gypsy ca says - dont use it, if it doesnt flake, it WILL yellow over time.

also after a few months of walking on it, it will start to look like a dull scratched up mess. even marine topcoats wont help. any worthwhile porch floor paint is sufficient to withstand use.

also if your floor is the least bit damp the paint will bond then start to flake off. best time to do this is when it is hot and you know the surface is 100%dry.
I would strongly advise AGAINST applying polyurethane over enamel. A good-quality deck enamel shouldn't need anything else over it to protect it.

The polyurethane will eventually flake in the sun; sun is terrible for polyurethane. Then, instead of reapplying just the paint, you'll have to sand or strip off the old poly before you repaint, if it's ever necessary.

    Trust me on this one!

Can a clear coat of polyurethane be applied over furniture that has been painted with latex paint?

Never tried this...but if you do use waterbased poly, and make sure the latex is fully cured before applying....I would be afraid of the latex lifting...

if i was going to consider this.. i would paint a board, let it sit for 48 hours, put on the poly and see what happens....Can a clear coat of polyurethane be applied over furniture that has been painted with latex paint?
Anything can be coated with something else, the question is should I do this? In this instance, you'll only cause yourself heartache. Latex and poly coats are basically incompatible. Latex is a much softer and less durable, surface-only coating than polyurethane, which when used on new porous surfaces sinks in and bonds on a molecular level. If this furniture item is for display only it may serve. Covering a softer finish with a harder one will only work if abrasion is severely limited or non-existent. Good paint integrity is like a chain and the chain is only as strong as its weakest link. You may be able to strip the furniture and use a water based acrylic solid stain to obtain the look and toughness you desire. Hope this helps. Can a clear coat of polyurethane be applied over furniture that has been painted with latex paint?
I painted my porch with latex and applied poly to it and it held up just fine, After some time though the poly yellowed the floor.
    yes. use water based poly.

Can you use Miniwax Wood Finish (Natural color) over 1 coat of clear water based polyurethane?

My floors came out blotchy after lots of prep work. Unfortunately even a very thin coat of Wood Filler will affect the finish. The newer boards do not blend in either. So, I know I am supposed to do a light sanding between polyurethane coats. Can I apply the Miniwax Wood Finish after sanding the 1st coat of poly? Or do I need to go back to square one?Can you use Miniwax Wood Finish (Natural color) over 1 coat of clear water based polyurethane?
Sorry to say you'll need to strip the poly and start from scratch. Poly is a finish, nothing will go on top.

To prevent blotching, sand the floor and use a pretreatment. I use what is called a spit coat of shellac. This is a very thinned shellac (much less than a 1lb cut) and helps seal the wood so stains and/or finishes will go on better.

You could even use shellac as the finish as it is very easy to repair. Can you use Miniwax Wood Finish (Natural color) over 1 coat of clear water based polyurethane?

  • Will clear polyurethane remove, drip or blur fluorescent paint?

I'm building a wooden dance floor would like to protect guest from splinters...Will clear polyurethane remove, drip or blur fluorescent paint?
If you are painting the entire floor and just want to protect that paint from wearing off you can use an epoxy floor paint. It will save time and money.

But, to answer the actual question I would put a few coats of the paint on so it is a solid thick coat preferably using eggshell or satin finish. The you'll need to scuff sand the paint to rough it up and degloss the paint a little. You need to do this in between every coat for better bonding. Once the floor has been scuffed, swept, vacuumed and tacked cloth put on a product called SealCoat made by Zinnsser. This is a bonding coat and will stick to the paint very well. It is clear and will not harm the paint. Within three hours of applying the SealCoat (it dries in about 15 minutes) go ahead and put a coat of oil based polyurethane over the top of it. This will need to sit overnight to dry. Once again you'll need to scuff sand, sweep, vacuum and tack cloth the floor. Once it is clean put your final coat of oil based polyurethane on it. Let dry for 72 hours before any heavy walking, furniture, etc. is put on the floor. Will clear polyurethane remove, drip or blur fluorescent paint?
Hm... I don't think it's the best thing to use. Polyurethane won't remove or blur the paint. There is a polyurethane specially made for floors that may be a little more durable, but I suggest using either that or paint instead; like maybe an oil/alkyd based paint, or that water-based porch and floor paint that you can find at the Home Depot. The oil/alkyd paint is much thicker so you won't have a problem with splinters. The porch and floor paint is the best way to go; it will cover up the fluorescent paint (not sure if you want to keep that color or not), but it's the most durable for floors. But if you wan't to keep that fluorescent paint, I guess the second best thing to do would be to use that clear floor polyurethane.
Try it on a small sample piece.

Blonde moment...I put hallway/bedroom paint in the bathroom. Can I use a polyurethane clear coat to seal it?

I assume you mean you put a latex (water based) paint in the bathroom.

Don't worry, your fine. Do not seal it with Poly or you will create a maintenance problem,

As long as the latex paint does not get showered on with water constantly you are OK.

In the future I would recommend Latex....yes I said latex With 100% acrylic. It will dry fast, clean up easy and shed water beautifully.

Good luckBlonde moment...I put hallway/bedroom paint in the bathroom. Can I use a polyurethane clear coat to seal it?
yeah but it may not work, and it may give you shiny walls (if you use enough of it).

but the bedroom paint should do fine, unless you splash ALOT in the tub.Blonde moment...I put hallway/bedroom paint in the bathroom. Can I use a polyurethane clear coat to seal it?
i think that it will be ok..with that paint...i've done alot of painting in my life and i'v never used special paint for a bathroom and never had any trouble with it
The paint will be alright, I have the same paint in my bathroom as the bedroom and its fine even after 5 years.
Why don't you just buy the correct paint (high gloss or semi gloss) and just paint over it? For sure the correct paint will seal it and what paint is under it does not matter.
Best solution, if you like the color, get a quart or as needed of a semi-glass paint to cover the flat!
The better chose would be to repaint with semi- gloss or High- gloss paint. However semi- gloss is easier to paint over later without having to use a primer if you decide on a semi- gloss paint a few years later.
You will have to strip it and sand it. With all the moisture in the bathroom, it will grow mold and start cracking. Although the crack old look is a hit today.

What does that have to do with a blonde moment? Mistakes are made everyday; don't need to insult any one group for it.
definitely yes. do 2 coats for extra protection
Ask your local paint store, but I don't think thats a common practice... I wouldn't see how you would be able to paint over it without somehow sanding down all the walls!
The paint is not a problem. If it really bothers you, then buy a gloss or semi-gloss paint and repaint the bathroom.

Can I use an air paint gun to apply polyurethane or clear coat to small wood products and how?

I am applying polyurethane to small wood ';objects'; that I will be producing in a large quantitiy. If possible, what kind of gun, what clear coat, how to dilute, etc. I was looking to buy an air paint gun at home depot or lows, cheap also. Any time you mix air with a coating (especially clearcoat) you have a high possibility of bubbles. Most pros use an HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) sprayer. These are not cheap.

Tips on applying polyurethane clear gloss varnish onto plywood?

i have tried this before but has not come out as better then expected. I have also used a good quality brush but i want tips on how to get a perfect finish on applying a polyurethane clear gloss finish onto a plywood piece.Tips on applying polyurethane clear gloss varnish onto plywood?
Sand between light coats with progresively finer grit sandpaper.

    Allow ample dry-time between re-application.

Don't glop thick and heavy coats on, go slow and easy.

Good Luck!Tips on applying polyurethane clear gloss varnish onto plywood?
you have to sand each coat, use a very fine sand paper, after each coat has dryed, then wipe it down with a damp cloth, [this is called tacking] it removes the dust, don,t sand the last coat, we use 3 coats,

if you are staining the wood first do the same to the first coat of stain, then give it another coat of stain, sand, tack then polyurathane it,
The brush is the most important part, and secondly using a good quality poly is important also. Don't be afraid to put on plenty of product. A good poly should level it self out. Avoid over brushing. I like to build up a film( 2 coats) before I sand, and then lay out the final coat.
    1. Thin the varnish, even though the can may say not to. I thin the first two coats 50-50, third coat 2-1 and the later coats at least 10%

    2. Sand between coats with P400 paper. 3M's 216U is great stuff.

    3. Put on as little as possible consistent with complete coverage. The biggest mistake I see is people putting it on too thick.

    4. Don't over work the wet varnish. You are not painting a barn. Slow, steady strokes. When you are done with an area, ';tip-off'; by lightly taking an unloaded brush and while holding the brush nearly vertical and with minimal pressure, make long, straight strokes across your work.

    5. Pour your varnish is a clean container and work out of it. Don't work directly from a can as you will introduce contaminants in the finish. If you have any left in your can when you are done with a coat, throw it away.

    6. Use a high quality natural bristle brush. I prefer ';badger hair'; for at least the later coats. They run about $20-30, but mine is 20 years old and works well. This will be the best $20 you will ever spend.

    7. If you have a choice, apply the finish to horizontal surfaces.

    8. Work in a clean, dust-free, environment. Once you have applied the varnish, leave. It will pick up and hold anything that lands on it for several hours.

What would make a clear polyurethane turn a milky white when putting it on over a newly stained cabinet?

My husband is restaining our kitchen cabinets. After he got finished with the stain and it was dry, he started putting on a coat of clear polyurethane, and after giving a couple of doors a coat of it, he noticed that they were turning a milky white. If anyone could please tell us why, we would really appreciate it. Thank You! Msbb45What would make a clear polyurethane turn a milky white when putting it on over a newly stained cabinet?
It sounds like the Poly soaked up moisture from either the wood in the doors or stain. You normally see this when a hot container is set on a table surface. The moisture is sucked up into the clear coat. What would make a clear polyurethane turn a milky white when putting it on over a newly stained cabinet?
    moisture
It's because polyurethane is an organic material noted for high abrasion, ozone, corona and radiation characteristics.

    Try clear lacquer instead.
